Free temporary parking program ends as major changes to downtown parking infrastructure in Red Deer approach

(Red Deer, Alberta)

A program that offered free temporary parking options throughout downtown Red Deer is ending, as scheduled, next week. The blue meter bags identifying free parking opportunities will be removed January 9, and all meters will once again require payment.

The Free Temporary Downtown Parking Program was first introduced from June to December 2021 and stemmed from The City of Red Deer’s Leading Forward project, which aimed to increase the vibrancy of downtown and strengthen the downtown economy by offering easier access to local businesses. Following positive feedback from downtown businesses and residents and budgetary support from City Council, the program was reinstated for the same time period in 2022.

The timing for the end of the program is linked to the implementation of The City’s Parking Infrastructure Project, anticipated to be complete by summer 2023. The project includes the removal of all existing parking equipment and technology followed by an alignment of practices with new technology that is easier to understand and use and improves the overall customer experience.

“We are looking forward to announcing more details about the upcoming changes to Red Deer’s downtown parking options in the coming months,” said Amy Fengstad, Acting Inspections and Licensing Manager. “We’re excited to launch a new parking system that is easier to understand and use, and adds to a positive downtown experience for residents and visitors.”
