Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board seeking new members

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Starting Monday, October 30, 2023, The City of Red Deer will be accepting applications for the Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board (RARB). This board is responsible for issuing decisions on complaints related to property assessments across more than 30 central Alberta municipalities.

The board is an impartial, independent body comprised of citizen members that hear and issue evidence-based decisions on formal complaints from property owners who disagree with the assessed values of their property within the partner municipalities.

“Our board members are a diverse group of central Alberta residents with backgrounds in areas such as property valuation and law. There is no formal training required to apply, just a keen interest in property assessment,” said Jackie Kurylo, LAS Appeals Coordinator. “The regional board is instrumental in ensuring partner municipalities have access to qualified, experienced and unbiased board members.”

Once selected, board members will receive mandatory training provided through Municipal Affairs and will receive remuneration for their responsibilities and time spent serving on the board. Most hearings are held online, so applicants should also have a strong understanding of technology; specifically, online meeting platforms and MS Office Suite (or equivalent).

Preference will be given to those with expertise on quasi-judicial boards or those with an assessment, legal or valuation background. Equally important is the ability to absorb and analyze large amounts of information and draft professional documents. Interested candidates should be available during the day for training and hearings.

To apply, go to www.reddeer.ca/rarb and complete the application. The deadline to apply is November 20, 2023.
