Drivers on 19 Street will soon experience some traffic pattern changes as contractors get set to start roundabout construction at the intersection of 19 Street and 40 Avenue.
Starting late next week, no left turns will be permitted at the intersection and traffic heading north or south on 40 Avenue will be detoured to turn right onto 19 Street as no straight-through traffic will be permitted.
“This traffic pattern will maximise the work area and help to keep the project on schedule,” said Christine Villeneuve, Project Manager for The City of Red Deer. “There are also traffic delays on 19 Street between Gaetz Avenue and 49 Avenue as they complete the road rehabilitation there.”
The City would also like to remind pedestrians and bicyclists that trails on the north and south of 19 Street are closed between Irwin Avenue and Sharpe Avenue. The trail on the south will be open from Sharpe Avenue to access Oxbows Off Leash Dog Park through the north entrance gate.
“Crews and construction equipment will be actively moving through the area,” said Villeneuve. “To ensure the safety of the crews and anyone who is using the trails, we have closed the trails to the public.”
Roundabout construction is expected to go into October 2024 and road rehabilitation between Gaetz and 40 Avenue is expected to wrap up mid-summer. The crew does plan to shut down the work area and have all lanes of traffic between Gaetz Avenue and 49 Avenue open for the upcoming Westerner Days celebration at Westerner Park from July 17 to 21.
