Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services enhance roadway safety

April 13, 2026 2:50 PM

Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services continue to play an integral role in roadway safety.

Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services proactively patrol our city, enforcing traffic safety violations such as distracted driving, speeding, and impaired driving. RCMP Traffic services assist in all areas of policing and often work in partnership with the City of Red Deer Municipal Enforcement.

Between Apr. 1, 2025 and Mar. 31, 2026, Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services conducted 195 traffic enforcement operations. As a result of these projects, a total of 1644 charges were laid, under provisions of the Traffic Safety Act.

Operation highlights include the following: 470 speed related violations, 144 intersection infractions, 230 other moving vehicle infractions such as failing to signal, driving without proper supervision, or stunting.  13 motorists were charged with careless driving, and another 13 drivers were driving with either a prohibited or suspended license.

RCMP issued violation tickets for 621non-moving vehicle infractions for improper vehicle equipment, which included no bumper, no headlights, or window glazing and tint. Red Deer RCMP wish to remind vehicle owners of the dangers of after market tinted windows. Tinted windows pose an extreme safety risk to all occupants of a vehicle, as well as other vehicles and pedestrians on the roads. Driver vision is significantly impacted particularly at night, and tinted window coverings eliminate the purpose of safety glass. Safety glass is meant to shatter with soft edges reducing injury. Tint holds the glass pieces together which creates dangerous jagged edges that can cause significant injury to a person.

11 drivers were given immediate roadside sanctions for impaired driving that registered a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08 percent. This number solely reflects the highest level of impairment and is not a complete representation of all impaired drivers in our city.

64 distracted driving infractions were identified and ticketed, where drivers were found to be using a cellular device while driving. Every day, a significant number of drivers are seen on their devices at stop lights, stop signs, and while the vehicle is in motion. Each time, the driver’s attention is taken away from the roadway, putting pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users at risk.

53 people failed to wear a seat belt either while driving or riding as a passenger in a vehicle. Red Deer RCMP would like to remind drivers to ensure all passengers are properly buckled before driving, including children. Ensure all child car seats are properly installed and your child is properly secured. For child car seat safety tips and information visit Transport Canada at www.tc.canada.ca.

In addition to the above, six liquor, two cannabis, and 17 other provincial infractions were enforced.

Red Deer RCMP would like to remind the public that traffic safety is a shared responsibility.

Drivers and owners are responsible for having proper documentation: drivers license, registration, and insurance. Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services are committed to reduce collisions and make roads safer for our citizens.
