Red Deer’s new City Council sworn in today

Red Deer’s newly elected City Council officially began its four-year term today with a Swearing-In Ceremony at City Hall, followed by the first Organizational Meeting of Council.

This morning, Mayor Cindy Jefferies and eight councillors - Kraymer Barnstable, Tristin Brisbois, Bruce Buruma, Cassandra Curtis, Adam Goodwin, Chad Krahn, Jaelene Tweedle, and Dianne Wyntjes - took their oaths of office, officially assuming their roles as the 2025–2029 Red Deer City Council. The ceremony was conducted by the Honourable Assistant Chief Justice R.A. Snider in Council Chambers and attended by many of the councillors’ family members, friends, and community supporters, who joined in celebrating this important moment for Red Deer’s new City Council.

Following the ceremony, Council convened its Organizational Meeting, which focused on establishing Council’s governance framework for the year ahead.

Key matters included:

  • Appointment of the Deputy Mayor rotation for 2025–2026
  • Confirmation of Council representation on a wide range of committees, commissions, and societies, both within the community and regionally
  • Appointment of citizen representatives to committees and boards that provide vital community input into City decision-making
  • Approval of meeting dates for 2026 Regular Council and Standing Committee sessions

Highlights from today’s decisions include:

  • Ratification of the 2025–2026 Council appointments to more than 25 internal, community, and regional committees, including the Audit Committee, Emergency Advisory Committee, Municipal Planning Commission, and Policing Committee.
  • Appointment of new citizen members to key advisory bodies such as the Public Art Commission, Housing and Homelessness Integration Committee, Mayor’s Recognition Awards Committee, Red Deer Public Library Board, River Bend Golf and Recreation Society Board, and Red Deer & District Family and Community Support Services Board.
  • Approval of new City representatives to the Red Deer Regional Airport Authority Board and ratification of a Board of Directors appointment to the Red Deer Downtown Business Association.
