During today’s City Council meeting, Council discussed the Sorensen Station Washroom project and instructed administration to move forward with plans to have the facilities open by the end of March 2026.
Additionally, City Council directed administration open a semi-permanent washroom facility in Red Deer’s downtown, like prior years, for the summer of 2025.
The Sorensen Station washroom project was originally intended to come back as part of the 2026 capital program but was prioritized for earlier discussion during the 2025 budget deliberations following a Notice of Motion from Councillor Wyntjes. Today’s report responded to this Notice of Motion, exploring potential costs, funding options and the necessary renovations to bring the Sorensen Station washrooms back into operation.
With Council’s decision today, $450,000 will be added to the 2025 Capital Budget to be funded by debt (borrowing) for the Sorensen Station washroom project. Ongoing operating costs will be placed into the 2026 operating budget for future Council approval. Additionally, $50,000 was allocated for the semi-permanent washroom, funded from the 2025 operating reserves.
“We know we need washrooms in our downtown, and with City Council’s direction today, administration will proceed with the necessary work to get the washrooms at Sorensen Station back up and running,” said Sarah Tittemore, Community Services General Manager.
The Sorensen Station washrooms, which opened with the parkade and transit hub in 2010, were closed in 2020 due to ongoing damage, vandalism, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite efforts to maintain the facility, the washrooms were frequently closed, and operational challenges arose. The COVID-19 pandemic further necessitated their closure, but extensive repairs and upgrades are required to make them functional and secure.
Upgrades to plumbing, improved accessibility, enhanced security features, and the addition of an on-site attendant to ensure cleanliness and safety during operational hours is required as part of this work.
"Access to public washrooms in downtown Red Deer is an ongoing concern, and today’s decision reflects our commitment to addressing that need,” said Mayor Ken Johnston. “We understand the current financial realities and constraints facing The City, and we must also strive to be nimble as we adjust and respond to meet the evolving needs of our community.”
