Native Friendship Society: Success Story
A First Nations couple in their 50s were successfully housed by the RDNFS Homelessness Prevention Program. They had come from Edmonton and were staying with their daughter. They were finding it difficult to find housing. They felt it was because they were native. I gave them some contacts for landlords that I know do not discriminate. Shortly after they were housed. I helped them with the damage deposit, household furniture and housewares. She was having health complications due to the stress of being homeless which landed her in the hospital. Once she got a home her health greatly improved as well as her mental health. It was patience, perseverance and unconditional acceptance that helped this family become housed. They are safe, housed and culturally supported.
