How AMI Works
Learn how meter reading currently works vs. how AMI meters will work.

The City of Red Deer is modernizing its electric utility infrastructure throughout the city to improve reliability, efficiency and service by upgrading to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
New AMI meters allow for two-way digital communication and automated meter reading. Currently, The City reads approximately 45,000 residential and commercial meters manually each month.
This upgrade is essential to meeting regulatory standards and to replace outdated, costly and hard-to-repair technology.
The first phase will involve upgrading the metering infrastructure at each residential and small business property in Red Deer, followed by industrial and large commercial properties. Residential and commercial installations will begin Spring 2026 and is expected to take approximately eight months. Once complete, large commercial property meter upgrades will begin, likely in 2027.
