Ecological Management System
The Ecological Management System (EMS) is a database/mapping inventory system. The program has been in development since the early 1990s. There are over 30,000 ecological items inventoried through the EMS.
Environmental Impact
An established EMS will allow us and our various departments to minimize environmental impacts by analyzing ecological information to more effectively manage the resources of the community.
Significance to the Community
The Ecological Management System will help fulfil the desire for a healthy natural environment and well managed, sustainable parks system. The EMS approach complements other communities using tree inventories and other ecological based inventories and map systems.
Inventory data, map location and related ecological information are used to:
- Provide an integrated approach to effectively manage ecology of the area.
- Help establish and plan maintenance schedules and budgets.
- Prepare ecological information for use in a Geographical Information System (GIS).
- Provide more accurate valuations of ecological assets and services.
