How to Minimize Flooding and Drainage Problems

Be on the lookout for opportunities to reduce the risk of flooding and drainage problems in and around your property.

Do your part to prevent issues from happening:

  • Do not put grease or objects (diapers, plastic bags, wipes, panty hose, paper towels, hygiene products, cat litter) down your drains or toilets.
  • If you have an older property, consider replacing your water or sewer system with newer pipe.
  • Ensure that appliances and their associated fittings and seals are in good repair.

Our maintenance teams are responsible for monitoring the condition of the water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure to ensure that lines are clean and free of obstructions. We carry out regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of catch basins, manholes, mains and public hydrants, which make up the collection and distribution system.

  • Take action and keep storm drain surfaces, also called catch basins, clear of leaves and debris.
  • In the fall, sweep up leaves for yard waste collection or composting to prevent flooding from plugged drains.
  • In winter and spring, keep storm drains clear of snow from your driveways and sidewalks.
  • Make sure that your sump pumps and backflow prevention valves are working.
  • Ensure downspouts and leaders are secure, of proper length, directed down and away from your property and your neighbours property.
  • Proper lot grading and drainage is important.

What to do if water backs up on your street or yard

Backups of this nature are usually due to heavy rainfall or warm weather creating heavy snow melt. Some residents will clear the snow and ice away or remove debris that is covering the catch basin. Residents who perform this action do so at their own risk and should always remain cautious of hazards. Removing the debris will allow the water to flow from the street into the catch basin. If the area does not drain after clearing the catch basin, this may be an indication of a different issue and Environmental Services should be contacted. Alternatively, contact Utility Services at 403-342-8750 and we will send out a crew to clear the area for you.
