Red Deer, Alta. – On Nov. 14, 2024, at approximately 9:19 a.m., Red Deer RCMP received a report, from staff at a local school in the neighbourhood of Oriole Park, that two students were approached by an unknown driver during their walk to school. The driver offered to give them a ride, but the children declined and promptly left the area.
Red Deer RCMP are using this opportunity to remind children, parents, and caregivers of important safety tips for walking to and from school and how to respond if approached by a stranger.
Tips for children walking to school:
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings: always pay attention to what is happening around you
- Walk in groups: It is safer to walk with friends or classmates
- Follow safe routes: Stick to main roads and pathways, and avoid isolated or less-traveled areas
- Trust your instincts: If something feels wrong, leave the area and seek help immediately
- Do not accept rides or gifts from strangers: Even if the person appears friendly, refuse and move away quickly
What to do if someone offers you a ride?:
- Firmly say no and leave the area: Walk away in the opposite direction of the vehicle
- Go to a safe place: Seek out a trusted adult, a friends house, or a public space
- Report the incident: Tell a parent, teacher, or police officer as soon as possible
Tips for parents to discuss with their children:
- Open communication: Regularly talk with your child about their route to and from school and what to do in unusual situations
- Roleplay scenarios and set up a plan: Practice how to respond if a stranger approaches. Make sure your child knows who they can trust and who they can go for help
- Emergency contact: Teach your child how to call you or another trust adult and remember important phone numbers
- Come up with a codeword: If someone other than yourself has to pick up your child come up with a codeword so they can be sure the person who picking them up is a trusted adult
