Thanks to a provincial grant, The City of Red Deer Transit Services will be piloting a reduced monthly pass to riders. The pilot program is called the Transit Fare Assistance Pass and will offer a reduction of up to 55 per cent for a monthly pass for those who qualify.

The quickest way to apply for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass is by filling out the online form. You can also apply in person at Sorensen Station if you require support.

How can I qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass?

To qualify for the reduced monthly pass, riders must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Receiving
    • Assured Income for Severely Handicapped (AISH)
    • Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)
    • Alberta Income Supports
  • Current tenants within the Red Deer Housing Authority Program
  • Qualify under the Low Income Cut Off
  • Approved for The City of Red Deer’s Recreation Fee Assistance Program
How much will a monthly pass cost if I qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass?

A monthly transit pass for those who qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass will cost $34, no matter the type of monthly pass they purchase – adult, senior or student.

What are the regular monthly Transit fares?

As of September 1, 2023, the following are the regular monthly Transit rates:

  • Unlimited Ride (Monthly Pass)
  • Adult - $75
  • Senior - $62
  • Student - $62
If I purchased a pass already for November, but qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass, can I get a refund?

Yes, if you pre-purchased your monthly pass for November, then qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass, you can visit customer service at Sorensen Station to receive a refund for the difference in price. Proof of purchase is required for refund (receipt or registered MyRide card), and refund will go onto original method of payment.

Can youth apply for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass?

Yes, however, we do recommend the household parent/guardian submit the application on their behalf. We recognize there may be exceptions, if this is not possible youth are encouraged to apply with additional notes.

How long will it take to find out if I qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass?

Once an application is submitted, it could take up to 10 business days to process and notify applicants.

If I receive notification that I qualify before November 1, can I purchase my card before the cards are accepted on buses?

Yes, once you qualify, you are able to purchase your pass at Sorensen Station. Our buses will not accept these cards until November 1.

How long is The City piloting the Transit Fare Assistance Pass?

The provincial grant allows for a pilot program through to March 31, 2024.

If I already have a monthly pass and have qualified for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass, what do I do?

Once you have been notified that you qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass, you will need to visit Sorensen Station the first month to verify eligibility and reload your monthly pass. Once you have done this, you can reload your monthly pass at one of our City of Red Deer reload locations (Sorensen Station, City Hall, Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre, Recreation Centre, Michener Aquatic Centre).

If I qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass, and have not held a monthly Transit pass previously, what do I do?

Once you have been notified that you qualify for the Transit Fare Assistance Pass, you will need to visit Sorensen Station to verify eligibility and purchase your monthly pass on to the card. Once you have done this, you can reload your monthly pass at the Reload Stations in the future.
